School Tree Planting Project

In conjunction with Synthomer Corporation and Pilgrim’s Pride (Pilgrim’s), Monroe Union Breakfast Rotary developed a tree planting and education program in 2018 for local elementary schools. The program involves club members, Union County North Carolina arborists, and Union County Public Schools teachers and students. The program aims to teach participating 4th graders the importance of trees in their community and the world. Students learn how to plant and care for trees properly. Hands-on practice follows as the students help plant a few large trees on their school campus. The kids take home a seedling to plant at home.

In 2021, despite Covid, 628 students from 7 schools participated in planting 14 large trees on school campuses and 180 seedlings. The program helps restore a declining tree canopy in Union County
